Based in Nottingham, the Russell Press is a printer, established in 1968 by the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation.

Initially the company was established to help print pro-peace literature as part of Bertrand Russell’s activism. The company then went on to provide a supportive and cost-effective printing service for the voluntary sector.

The achievement of an environmental award has enabled Russell Press to begin embedding environmental responsibility into their management operations. This has allowed them to gain a competitive edge when attracting new customers.

After contacting Green Mark in 2009, Russell Press achieved the award in 2010, scoring high marks for their compliance with environmental legislation, dedication to waste minimisation and management and for communicating environmental awareness to staff through regular briefings and training.

As a result of their work with Green Mark, the Russell Press have succeeded in huge reductions in resource usage, with a gains of £8,000 on paper waste alone, as well as significant achievements in lowering energy and fuel usage, sourcing of ethical materials, and use of recycled and chlorine free materials.

Mike Coates General Manager said “The Green Mark is a useful exercise to go through, it not only taught me the importance of minimising our impact on the environment, but more importantly how.”

Russell Press are now embarking on ISO 14001, and are already well advanced in its work towards the standard. They now look set to achieve this by mid 2012. We wish them the best of luck.
