Green Mark Level 1

Improving your environmental performance

Level 1 provides an introduction to environmental management. It is suitable for organisations wishing to start addressing their environmental performance.

Green Mark Level 2

Developing and Implementing an EMS

Level 2 builds upon the achievements of Level 1, and is suitable for organisations who wish to develop an Environmental Management System (EMS).

Each Green Mark level consists of a five-step process:

  • Initial Online Audit;
  • Gap Analysis Report – outlining actions to be taken to meet the standard;
  • Final Audit;
  • Award Stage; and
  • Reassessment.

Step 1 - Initial Appraisal

You will complete the online audit with the aid of the online guidance and template documents to get a sense of the company’s current environmental performance and establish areas for improvement. This should take 1 to 2 hours, followed by some time to collate and attach the required evidence.

Step 2 - The Initial Report

Your Green Mark Adviser will audit your responses and create a tailored action report containing straightforward, low or no cost guidelines on how to meet the Green Mark standard and:

  • Improve your environmental performance.
  • Comply with environmental legislation.
  • Put environmental best practice initiatives in place.
  • Reduce operational costs through increasing efficiency.
  • Develop or review your environmental policy.
  • Communicate environmental achievements.

Step 3 - Taking Action

You will schedule and implement the actions. Your Green Mark Adviser will be available by telephone and email to support your progress throughout this stage.

Step 4 - Final Audit

Your Final Audit will assess the progress you’ve made against your Green Mark Action Report before award.

Step 5 - Award Review

A Final Audit Report will outline if you’ve achieved a Green Mark.

Demonstrating your commitment to Greener business practices

If you successfully achieve a Green Mark you’ll receive a certificate which is valid for 1 year. You’ll also be sent marketing materials, including a high resolution logo and a template press release.

Recertification

To recertify you’ll need to demonstrate that you’ve maintained and improved you environmental performance on an annual basis. Organisations holding a Green Mark Level 1 are encouraged to progress to Level 2 after 2 years.
