Integrating sustainability into core business activities and organisational culture is not an easy process that can be achieved overnight. On-going training and employee engagement is required to improve the sustainability skills of employees and keep them aware of their changing environment.
However, when this is achieved it makes a difference: it contributes to wellbeing and performance, leading to better resource management and competitive advantage as the organisation differentiates itself from the others and demonstrates that it cares about people and the natural environment. Consequently, a business increases its profitability and attracts more funding to achieve financial sustainability.
All these factors are well understood by Reed in Partnership (Reed), a Green Mark client that strives to meet its sustainability targets.
At the heart of Reed’s Environmental and Sustainability Policy is the ‘Think Green Environmental Sustainability e-Learning’ module. “We wanted to find a method that would enable us to give our staff, and the staff in our supply chain, an easy and interactive way to learn more about Environmental Sustainability.” says Eleanor Gaskel-Taylor, Reed’s Head of Continuous Improvement. All Reed staff must complete this as part of their induction into the company and all existing staff must complete it every two years. In addition, Reed spreads this good practice to organisations that are part of its supply chain, by requiring them to complete the e-learning module when they actually join the Reed supply chain.
The module is very successful, mainly because it is interactive, with ‘Boris the Bloodhound’ taking them through the tasks. The cost of e-learning is lower than other more traditional methods. It is also less time consuming and more flexible – employees can decide themselves when would like to complete it.
The module is personalised which helps make it more meaningful and Reed have made it relevant to their offices; for example, by using photos from their offices in the content.
The e-learning process tests what has been learnt; asks for completion of tasks and provides additional information to reinforce learning.
The module provides useful information and makes people think about their choices, both at work and at home. For example, one of the sections looks at transport choices.
The last section of the module refers staff to further reading so they are able to learn more about Environmental Sustainability in their own time.
